The Ultimate Guide to Hosting a Sauna Party

There is something about a sauna that brings people together. The shared experience of heat, relaxation, and great conversation creates bonds that a typical backyard barbecue simply cannot match. Whether you are celebrating a birthday, hosting a neighborhood gathering, or just want a memorable weekend with friends, a sauna party is the way to do it.

Planning Your Sauna Party

Guest List and Timing

Our mobile sauna comfortably seats six to eight people at a time. For a party of 12 to 16 guests, plan on rotating groups through the sauna while others relax, eat, and socialize outside. A good sauna party typically runs three to four hours, giving everyone plenty of time for multiple rounds.

Choose the Right Spot

You will need a flat area at least 10 by 20 feet for the sauna, plus space for the cold plunge and a gathering area. A driveway, patio, or flat section of lawn works perfectly. We handle all the setup, so just make sure the space is accessible.

Setting the Scene

Create a Cozy Atmosphere

  • String lights around your gathering area for ambiance
  • Outdoor seating with blankets for cooling off between rounds
  • A fire pit for gathering around after sauna sessions
  • Music at a low volume to set the mood

Stock Up on Supplies

  • Plenty of towels (at least two per guest)
  • Robes or cover-ups for between rounds
  • Water, water, water and electrolyte drinks
  • Flip-flops or sandals for walking between the sauna and the house

Food and Drinks

Finnish sauna culture pairs perfectly with simple, satisfying food. Here are some crowd-pleasing options:

Before sauna:

  • Light snacks like fruit, nuts, and cheese
  • Keep it simple and avoid heavy meals

After sauna:

  • Grilled sausages (a Finnish sauna staple)
  • Smoked salmon on rye bread
  • Fresh salads and pickled vegetables
  • Hearty soups or stews in winter

Drinks:

  • Sparkling water with cucumber or citrus
  • Herbal teas
  • Light beer or cider after your session (never during)
  • Finnish-inspired lingonberry juice

Sauna Etiquette for Your Guests

Send your guests a quick message before the party covering the basics:

  • Bring a swimsuit and two towels
  • Stay hydrated before and during the party
  • No phones in the sauna (heat damages electronics and it is meant to be a screen-free zone)
  • Listen to your body and take breaks when needed
  • Respect the quiet in the sauna itself

The Flow of the Party

Here is a suggested timeline for a four-hour sauna party:

  • Hour 1: Welcome guests, light snacks, first sauna rotation begins
  • Hour 2: Continue rotations, cold plunge time, outdoor conversation
  • Hour 3: Final sauna rounds, fire pit conversation
  • Hour 4: Post-sauna feast and relaxation

Making It Memorable

The best sauna parties have that extra touch:

  • Sauna hats are fun gifts for guests (they help protect your head from heat)
  • Essential oils on the sauna stones add a wonderful aroma (eucalyptus and birch are traditional)
  • A whisking session with birch branches (vihta) is the ultimate Finnish experience
  • Photography before and after the sauna, but never inside

A sauna party is more than an event. It is an experience your guests will talk about for years. The combination of heat, cold, food, and friendship creates something truly special that no restaurant dinner or movie night can replicate.
